Arts Projects in 2016

2016 has been a busy year so far! 

My first project for the year was with one of my favourite community groups, The Castle, Thornlie, this is a youth centre run by the City of Gosnells, run by Deb Ditchburn a brilliant youth worker.

The participants created 3D artworks from recycled bottles, newspapers etc. Unfortunately I was unable to get images of their finished artwork but here are a couple of my examples:

It's always fun to have an excuse to make another crazy artwork!

Following the Castle workshops I was fortunate to again be contracted by The Song Room  http://www.songroom.org.au/  

to run projects in two schools:

North Parmelia Primary School:

Where I worked with a group of parents and staff to create a series of picture boards to be installed as an entry statement to the school:

They were a fun group to work with, their ideas for the content of the boards are inspiring and the  installed boards have added an inspiring and colourful entrance to the school grounds.

Leda Primary School:

I had a similar project at Leda Primary again with a group of parents, this group produced artworks which will be mounted on the walls of the school buildings:

Again a great bunch to work with, their ideas for the artwork are inspirational and empowering.

April school holiday workshops at the Victoria park Centre for the Arts: http://www.victoriapark.wa.gov.au/art

A series of ten workshops were run over the two weeks of the school holidays. These included production of a collaborative artwork for the garden of the Art Centre, this was created on Marine plywood and incorporated 3D elements made from plastic bottles:

The resulting artwork is 1.2 by 4.9 metres and has added vibrancy and colour to the garden.

The workshops were well attended and many amazing and inspiring 3D and 2D artworks were created!

It is always a joy to encourage people of all ages get in touch with their creative side!

ArtsEdge AiR Project 2015 Residency at Beverley District High School

ArtsEdge AiR 2015 Residency at Beverley District High School April - September:

The biggest project of the year has been the ArtsEdge Air Residency at Beverley District High School.

Beverley is a small town in the Central Wheatbelt of WA. The school has over 180 students ranging from pre-primary to year 10. I had the good fortune to work with fellow artist Jenny Broun. Jenny is a resident of Beverley and was instrumental in putting me in touch with the school.

Our project explored sustainability using visual arts techniques and using reused recycled/up-cycled materials where possible.

The first part of the project focussed on creation of a series of collaborative artworks portraying many aspects of sustainability and environmental awareness, which were displayed at the Beverley Agricultural Show o the 22nd August:

Working with The Song Room

Working with The Song Room:

This year I've had the good fortune to connect with 'The Song Room', a not for profit organisation providing arts projects in schools.

I was given two projects each connecting with groups of parents and students to create artworks for two schools in Balga one of Perth's northern suburbs.

The first project took place over terms 1 and 2 at Warriapendi Primary School.

A series of three photo boards were designed and painted along with 6 'totem'poles and a number of wooden flags. these were installed as entry statements to the school grounds:

At the initial workshop the participants had a brainstorming session to decide on the content of the boards.

The workshops were well attended throughout their duration. The participants were enthusiastic and a very cohesive group.

 

The resulting artworks are bright and colourful and make a vibrant entrance into Warriapendi Primary School

The second Song Room Project was at Balga Primary School:

This was a similar project in that the artwork was produced on plywood boards, this time a piece was created to cover an old blackboard in a covered outdoor area. The finished work is 1.2 m x 5 m. The artwork also incorporated recycled plastic bottles to add a 3D effect:

The initial workshop employed brainstorming and drawing of ideas, these were then collated for the final design.

The workshops were again well attended by parents and children. The resulting artwork is bright and colourful and will brighten up a dark area in the school
