Town of Victoria Park Harmony Week Banner Project 2009

The aim of this project was to produce five feather banners 2.7 metres tall by 0.65 metres wide for the Town of Victoria Park. The ten participants who took part in the project came from diverse backgrounds; Nigerian, Croatian, South African, Indian, Colombian, Serbian, Polish, Aboriginal and European Australian.  Mayor Trevor Vaughan introduced the banners at the official launch and tells the story in this coverage of the event:

The object of the banners was to reflect aspects of life, culture and customs of this diverse group. The five banners produced represent sport, landmarks, food and food harvesting, costumes and customs. This project was challenging the initial meeting with the participants was held on Saturday 10th January. The time allocated for participation of the group was from this date until the 31st January. In all, ten workshops were held beginning on the 15th January. Time was limited and one of the major obstacles was that of availability of the participants. As a result of these restrictions I made the decision that the majority of the work would be of a photographic nature using modified images from the internet, books, photographs and magazines. The final workshop involved the participants in doing some hand prints on paper which were used for the lower borders of the banners. This was a particularly successful occasion and engendered an atmosphere of fun where all participants regardless of their artistic ability were able to express themselves to the same degree. What did I learn? From this wonderfully diverse group of people I learned that we all have more in common with each other than we perhaps realise at times. The banners were displayed during Harmony Week at Burswood Park on 15th March at the ‘Connect World Village’ event. Following that they were displayed outside the Town of Victoria Park offices during Harmony Week. The banners have been designed to be used regularly at various events held by the Town of Victoria Park.
